THE Zimbabwe national rugby sevens team that will be making their third successive Rugby World Cup Sevens appearance have named the squad to do duty at the tournament to be held at the Cape Town Stadium in South Africa.
The competition will run from September 9-11. The Cheetahs qualified for the competition after they finished second at the Rugby Africa Men’s Sevens competition which was held in Uganda back in April.
The second place finish was enough for the Cheetahs to also qualify for the Common Wealth games that took place in July but Zimbabwe is not a member association. Zambia took Zimbabwe’s slot as a result.
Focus now will be on next month’s Rugby World Cup Sevens in Cape Town, South Africa.
Cheetahs coach Graham Kaulback has since named his men to represent the country at the global showpiece.
Kudzai Mashawi will lead the Cheetahs side. While there are also places for the likes of Sam Phiri, Ryan Musumhi, the Munesu twins, Munopa and Munesu, Jafnos Chiwanza is the most experienced member of the Cheetahs squad.
Zimbabwe is making their sixth appearance at the Rugby World Cup Sevens since they made their debut in 1997 when the tournament was held in Hong Kong. They face Canada in a pre-round of 16 fixture.
