Zimbabwe Olympic Committee hosts major workshop on safe and inclusive sport

Ensuring safety and equal opportunities for all participants is a key priority in modern sports. National Olympic Committees play an important role in promoting these values at all levels. The Zimbabwe Olympic Committee recently held an educational workshop to raise awareness of safety and inclusion in sports.

This important step demonstrates the country’s commitment to fair play, mutual respect and equal opportunities for all athletes regardless of age, gender, race or physical ability. The event was a highlight for the Zimbabwean sporting community and deserves close attention.

Aims and objectives of the seminar

The workshop brought together 30 representatives of the Zimbabwean sports industry in the Hwange District of Matabeleland North Province. Its main objectives were to raise awareness of the importance of a safe and inclusive sporting environment and to further empower women in sports.

Participants attended a course of lectures and practical sessions covering a wide range of topics, such as:

  • identifying and preventing discrimination, harassment, and violence in sports;
  • creating a positive atmosphere of respect and mutual understanding;
  • promoting equal access and opportunities for all regardless of gender, disability, or ethnicity;
  • the role of coaches, managers, and referees in building a culture of safety.

Special attention was paid to the empowerment of women and girls in sports through specialized educational blocks. Already, the country’s women’s teams in many sports are achieving great success. Their popularity is even evidenced by the fact that if we decide to download 1xbet or applications from other well-known bookmakers, we can find many opportunities to bet on these or those women’s Zimbabwean teams. And we can say with confidence that the number of these teams will only increase.

Support and cooperation

The Zimbabwe Olympic Committee is grateful to the Norwegian Olympic and Paralympic Committee and the Confederation of Sport for funding this seminar. International cooperation and support for such initiatives is essential to promote the values of the Olympic Movement around the world.

The workshop is part of the activities of the newly established Commission for Safe Sport, chaired by Abel Chimuko. The commission was established in 2021 as part of the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee’s new 2025 development strategy. In the same year, the new commission held its first workshop on inclusivity.

The initiative is closely linked to other areas of work: promoting gender equality and diversity, developing communications, PR and diplomacy, and promoting Olympic values and environmental principles. The integrated approach reflects Zimbabwe’s desire to create a conducive and safe environment for all sports fans.

Conclusion

The workshop on Safety and Inclusion in Sport was a landmark event for Zimbabwe. It demonstrated the country’s commitment to fair play, equal opportunity and mutual respect. The event took place ahead of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, where Zimbabwe will be looking to improve on its previous achievements.

The experience of such educational programs needs to be replicated in other countries. Only by joining forces can we make great sports truly safe, inclusive and accessible to all who wish to participate. This initiative by Zimbabwe is an excellent example to follow in promoting the Olympic ideal.
