THE Zimbabwe Republic Police athletics team will today battle it out with their counterparts from Sadc countries as the eighth edition of the Southern Africa Regional Police Chiefs Co-operation Organisation Games burst into life here.Team Zimbabwe arrived here on Friday.
ZRP is expecting talented athletes like Trust Chidomaya, Olivia Chitate and Kennedy Chibwana, among others, to deliver.
The team has been training at the University of Namibia grounds, Independence Stadium and Namibia Agricultural College.
A number of sportspersons are trickling in for the Games with Team Zimbabwe hoping to make it a three success stories on the trot after emerging as the best in Malawi and the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2009 and 2011.
ZRP is set to battle it out with 13 other Sadc police teams in seven sporting events — athletics, darts, chess, football (men and women), netball, volleyball (men and women) and tennis. Namibia Prime Minister, Hage Geingob, launched the Games yesterday afternoon at a function that was attended by Police Commissioner General Augustine Chihuri.
“Our appreciation also goes to the business community and all Sadc member countries for providing both logistical and substantive support in preparing and organising these Games,” said Geingob.
“I am certain that all your contributions will play an essential role in ensuring that these Games will be a resounding success.
“Further, I would like to express my deep appreciation to the Heads of States in our respective Sadc countries for allowing you to be part of these Games and to participate under the motto, ‘Combating Crime, Unite in Sport’”.
Namibia Deputy Minister of Youth, National Service, Sport and Culture, Jerry Ekandjo, said the contribution of sport to the social and economic development of the African continent was multi-faceted.
