HIS Excellency President Emmerson Mnangagwa hosted a congratulatory ceremony at State House this morning for the Zimbabwe National Rugby team, the Zimbabwe Sables, in recognition of their remarkable achievement in lifting the Rugby Africa Cup in Uganda earlier this year.
The Sables triumphed over Algeria with a decisive 29-3 victory, marking their first title since 2012.

In a show of appreciation for the team’s hard work and dedication, President Mnangagwa awarded US$6 500 in cash prizes to the players and technical staff. This year’s Rugby Africa Cup is particularly significant, as it serves as the primary ranking tournament for African nations competing for a spot in the 2027 Rugby World Cup.

During the ceremony, the Sables presented President Mnangagwa with the championship trophy, alongside a framed jersey signed by the entire team as a token of gratitude. Additionally, the team gifted 600 pairs of branded stockings, which the President intends to donate to a sports academy of his choice.

Acting Minister of Sport, Arts and Recreation Hon. Kazembe Kazembe emphasised the importance of the Sables’ achievement and its impact on the country’s sporting aspirations as part of the Vision 2030 initiative, aiming to elevate Zimbabwe’s status in international sports.
“The Rugby Africa Cup is the major and only ranking tournament for all African countries vying for a spot for the Rugby World Cup in 2027. The Sables last won the Cup in 2012 after defeating Uganda in the finals and thereafter the top spot has mostly been dominated by Namibia,” said acting Minister Kazembe.
