Zimbabwe shines at Africa Pride Asia Pacific Awards 2024

Appreciate Africa Network celebrated its 11th anniversary and the 10th annual Africa Pride Asia Pacific Awards on Saturday.

The network was founded by Dr Samantha Sibanda, a Zimbabwean based in China.

The important event celebrates excellence and success in many fields, honouring individuals who have made a positive impact on the African and Asian Pacific communities. Awards span over 30 categories recognising organisations and individuals from diplomacy, business, the arts, youth development, media and more.

Ghanaian Ambassador Dr Winfred Hammon was guest of honour, symbolising the strong diplomatic ties between African nations and the Asia Pacific region. A total of 13 African ambassadors and their spouses, plus spouses from other embassies and staff of 20 African embassies in China attended.

With a record-breaking 118 nominees representing 29 African countries living in nine Asia Pacific countries, the event drew a notable audience.

Notably, participants journeyed from as far as Australia, Japan, South Korea and Malaysia to attend and receive their accolades.

The inaugural Female Ambassador Achievement award stood out as a tribute to the trailblazing contributions of African female ambassadors in China. Notable awardees included Republic of Guinea’s Ambassador Aminata Koita, Mozambican Ambassador Maria Gustava and Sao Tome Ambassador Isabel Domingos, showcasing the extraordinary leadership of women in diplomacy.

Ambassador Martin Mpana, Dean of Diplomatic Corps and Ambassador of the Republic of Cameroon, received recognition for his exceptional leadership among African ambassadors in China, setting a high standard for diplomatic excellence.

Ambassador Ibrahim Syllia of Senegal was lauded for his pivotal role as co-chair of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, highlighting his efforts in strengthening the Africa-China relationship.

A total of 13 diplomats were recognised for their efforts.

The main awards of the night, African Man of the Year and African Woman of the Year, were bestowed upon Dr Oussuby Sacko, the first African president of Kyoto University in Japan, and Christiane Adovelande, spouse of the Ambassador to Benin.

Christiane Adovelande’s exceptional contributions to the community and her role as Chairperson of the Group of Ambassador Spouses in China exemplified the spirit of service and dedication celebrated at the event.

The presence of Mr T Muranga, Charge d’Affaires of the Zimbabwe Embassy, added a touch of Zimbabwean pride to the evening, further emphasising the strong representation of Zimbabwe at the prestigious event.

As the event unfolded, five Zimbabwean recipients stood out among the array of award winners, showcasing the remarkable talent and accomplishments emerging from the nation.

Among the notable Zimbabwean recipients were Bridget Mutambirwa for Outstanding Achievement in Media & Communication. Fortune Nyabeze for Health & Fitness and Gerald DJ Gerrybeats for Entertainment.

The Africa Pride Asia Pacific Awards 2024 not only recognised individual excellence but also highlighted the collective talent and resilience of the Zimbabwean community.

Through their achievements, these exceptional individuals have not only brought honour to themselves but have also elevated Zimbabwe’s presence on the global stage, embodying the nation’s spirit of ingenuity and achievement.

In a world where recognition and acknowledgment are key to inspiring future generations, events like the Africa Pride Asia Pacific Awards serve as a beacon of hope and inspiration, fostering pride, unity, and collaboration across continents.

The spotlight may have dimmed on the grand evening, but the legacy of Zimbabwean excellence shines bright, illuminating a path for others to follow and aspire towards greater heights.
