Energy and Power Development Minister July Moyo has signed a Government Project Support Agreement (GPSA) with InfraCo Africa for the development of the 30MW Vungu Solar Project.

The signing took place on the sidelines of the ongoing Africa Energy Forum in Cape Town.

Earlier in the day, Minister Moyo participated in a high-level meeting focused on accelerating the implementation of large-scale solar projects across the continent.

The session, hosted by the South African Department of Electricity and Energy and sponsored by Sun Africa Renewable Energy Solutions, brought together stakeholders from across the energy sector.

The Minister provided an overview of Zimbabwe’s current power generation capacity, as well as the state of its electricity transmission and distribution infrastructure.

He highlighted the challenges posed by climate change and ageing technology, stressing the need for a transition towards more sustainable energy sources, particularly solar.

Minister Moyo said it was important for the private sector to participate in the country’s solar energy ambitions.

He said small power plants, supported through net metering, were already contributing approximately 60MW to the national grid, with the potential to scale up to 100MW in the near future.
