ZIMBABWE’S Cheetahs will today get a second chance to beat Germany when the two sides meet again in the quarter-finals of the Safari Sevens rugby tournament at Nyayo Stadium in Kenya.
The Cheetahs finished yesterday’s opening day of action on five points and third behind group winners Germany (9) and Kenya Shujaa (7).
It was, however, enough to place them as one of the two best third-place finishers from the group stage.
Earlier in the day, Zimbabwe and today’s opponents this morning, Germany, matched-up quite nicely in a scintillating match that finished 17-15 to the Europeans.
The Cheetahs Academy side then followed that up with a one-sided 40-0 victory over Nigeria’s Stallion Sevens, before crumbling under the weight of hosts Kenya Shujaa, who handed them a 26-5 hiding.
“I thought the Cheetahs Academy players played really well and today we ticked a lot of process goals,” said coach Graham Kaulback.
“The attitude was spot-on and it was a great learning experience for them.
“Obviously, we do have several work-ons for tomorrow, as we prepare for the cup quarter-finals in which we will play Germany again.
The women’s Sevens’ side spoiled it for their skipper Margaret Magwaro, who was celebrating her 35th birthday yesterday.
The Lady Cheetahs lost all their round-robin matches, including a 46-0 thumping at the hands of hosts Kenya.
