GOVERNMENT today launched the 10-Year Zimbabwe Sugarcane Industry Development Plan (2026–2035) in Chiredzi, a strategic blueprint aimed at transforming the sugar industry and accelerating Zimbabwe’s industrialisation drive under Vision 2030.
The plan was unveiled at Hippo Valley Country Club by a team of Cabinet ministers on behalf of President Mnangagwa.
The ministers included Industry and Commerce Minister Mangaliso Ndlovu, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development Minister Dr Anxious Masuka, Lands and Rural Development Minister Vangelis Haritatos, Minister of State for National Security Lovemore Matuke, and Masvingo Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Ezra Chadzamira.
Speaking at the launch, Minister Ndlovu said the plan will ensure that farmers benefit from the entire sugar cane value chain, which is in line with Vision 2030.
His counterpart, Minister Masuka, said the plan dovetailed with the plan to make Zimbabwe a regional agro-processing hub.
Minister Chadzamira said the plan will further grow the industry and help the two sugar mills in the Lowveld operate at their full installed capacity of 630 000 tonnes annually.
Zimbabwe Sugar Association chair Dr Tsitsi Choruma exhorted the sugarcane industry to modernise and improve efficiency.
Triangle and Hippo Valley Pvt Ltd managing director Engineer Tendai Masawi said the mills were geared to operate at full throttle with the anticipated increase in feedstock because of the plan.
