ZIMBABWE managed a credible 3rd position at the recently ended 17th edition of Confederation of Universities and Colleges Sports Association Game following a 40 medal haul.
The CUCSA games, which had 10 Southern African countries fighting for honours saw Zimbabwe collect seven gold, 16 silver and 17 bronze medals.
The athletics team contributed the largest number of the medal haul with 18.
Zimbabwe Tertiary Institutions Sports Union president Martin Zibwi applauded the team for the feat.
He also praised chess, netball, volleyball and basketball teams for their performances.
“I am very pleased with volleyball, basketball and among other teams which showcased remarkable performance. We have been lagging behind in volleyball but this year we managed to get gold and silver medals, and this shows that we are in the right direction,” said Zibwi.
Zimbabwe’s ladies volleyball team clinched a gold medal while their men’s team managed to clinch a silver medal.
Zibwi urged sponsors to uplift the tertiary institutions games by awarding athletes scholarships.
“I am pleading with the corporate world to give sponsorship to talented students. That can be appreciated as it can motivate students to take these competitions seriously,” said Zibwi.
South Africa came first followed by Zambia with Zimbabwe retaining its third position which they occupied in the previous Games which were staged in Namibia in 2012.
Zitusu president also confirmed that Zimbabwe will host the 18th edition of the Games in 2016.
