THE Confederation of African Rugby has awarded Zimbabwe the right to host the 2014 CAR Men Sevens tournament which will take place later this year. The tournament will be held at the Harare Sports Club on November 29-30 and is set to involve 12 countries — Kenya Uganda, Tunisia, Nigeria, Madagascar, Namibia, Botswana, Senegal, Zambia, Ivory Coast, South Africa and the hosts Zimbabwe.
Zimbabwe were awarded the rights in a unanimous decision carried out after the continent’s rugby governing body had expressed its approval of the union’s development and administration structures. CAR representative Jean Luc Barthes was in the country a month ago and was impressed by the progress that the country had made in its mandate of effectively running the game.
“I think they have done well in restructuring the administration of the game and I would particularly give special mention to their sound development plans.
“As CAR we are committed to helping Zimbabwe by all means possible, of course there is still a lot that needs to be done however this is dependent on funding which is a major challenge” said Barthes on the sidelines of the recently concluded Under-19 CAR tournament held in Namibia.
