Zimbabwe to host WBO event

Delta Force Boxing Promotions manager Clyde Musonda has been granted the rights to host the prestigious title fight by the franchise.

Already, Musonda has lined up Zimbabwean boxer Tapiwa Tembo to trade leather with Gibbon Kamota of Zambia for the vacant title in what should be the main bout.
“We have since deposited the money with the World Boxing Union to sanction the fight and the belt will be shipped for display before the end of the month if everything goes well.

“The two boxers Tembo and Kamota are top title contenders in the category and we signed the contracts for the fight,” said Musonda.
Chris Mulenga, from Oriental Quarries Boxing Promotions in Zambia, represented Kamota while Musonda signed for Tembo on Friday last week.

Mulenga had also come together with newly crowned African Boxing Union welterweight champion Charles Manyuchi who had been training under his stable in Lusaka.
“The holder of the bantamweight belt was stripped of his title after he failed to defend it within 90 days yet challengers were begging for the chance.

“This is an opportunity now for Tembo to restore the glory in Zimbabwean boxing by becoming a world champion.
“So far we have secured the rights to host the bout but we are still working on the venue.

“We have to host the event on August 31 and I hope to get a suitable venue outside Harare so that we spread the sport across Zimbabwe,” said Musonda.
Tembo, who is based in South Africa, has 11 professional fights from which he was defeated twice while Kamota has 13(4).

Musonda said he was still matchmaking for the supporting bouts.
“I was hoping to give a slot to Monalisa Sibanda to fight but now it’s now longer possible after tragedy befell her family this week,” said Musonda.

Sibanda’s four-year-old child Tatenda Simon died following a car accident in South Africa at the weekend.
“We do not have full details but I heard that Monalisa’s husband Tinofirei Simon, who is a leader of an apostolic sect, was travelling with the kid when the accident occurred.
“So I do not think Monalisa will be in the right frame of mind to fight after the funeral. Maybe I could rope in Diana Makumbe and another opponent,” said Musonda.
