BANTU Rovers’ Denzel Khumalo’s ninth minute strike was enough to hand Zimbabwe a win over hosts Angola in their opening match of the African Union Sports Council Region Five Under-20 Games on Saturday.
It was however a bad day in office for the ladies as they succumbed to a shock 2-0 loss to Namibia.
According to a report by Cosafa, Angola had only themselves to blame as they failed to utilise the numerous scoring chances that came their way, which also saw them hit the woodwork twice as Zimbabwe hung on for dear life. Zimbabwe takes on Swaziland at the November 11 stadium this afternoon.
In the other game in the men’s competition on Saturday, Zambia left it to the second half when they beat Swaziland 1-0 after a beautiful shot from outside the box from Damiano Kola in the 66th minute.
This match had all the ingredients of a thrilling encounter, but both teams struggled to convert the numerous chances they created throughout the game.
In the women’s competition, Namibia find themselves on three points behind South Africa on goal-difference only following their impressive 2-0 win over Zimbabwe.
A goal from Millicent Hikuam in the 26th minute and a Memory Ngonda penalty on the stroke of halftime gave Namibia the win.
They now face South Africa in what is expected to be a fierce tussle today.
