THE Marylebone Cricket Club’s (MCC) return to Zimbabwe after six decades has been hailed as a defining moment for sports diplomacy strengthening bilateral relations between Zimbabwe and England while promoting Zimbabwe as a premier sports tourism destination.

Tourism and Hospitality Industry Permanent Secretary, Dr Takaruza Munyanyiwa said the MCC’s visit symbolises far more than a series of cricket matches, describing it as “a bridge of friendship” between nations and cultures.

Speaking during a welcome reception for the MCC in Harare last night, Dr Munyanyiwa said the return of the world-renowned cricket club marks a milestone for both the sporting fraternity and Zimbabwe’s tourism and cultural diplomacy efforts.

“After a remarkable 60 years of absence, the Marylebone Cricket Club’s return on shore is a moment of great significance, not only for the cricket sporting fraternity but also for cultural and bilateral ties between Zimbabwe and England,” said Dr Munyanyiwa.

“I invite you to reflect on the deeper significance of your visit. Cricket is more than a game; it is a universal language that unites people, transcending geographical and cultural divides. It fosters friendship, mutual respect, and understanding—values that are essential in our interconnected world.”

Dr Munyanyiwa said sports tourism had become a vital component of Zimbabwe’s tourism strategy and was central to Government’s vision of promoting the country as a competitive and attractive destination.

“Sports Tourism is a vital component of our Ministry’s strategy; hence, the Sports Tourism Cluster is one of the clusters that we are pursuing in order to develop and promote tourism in Zimbabwe,” he said.

“Through events like this, we have the opportunity to showcase Zimbabwe’s breathtaking landscapes, rich history, and vibrant culture. Your presence here today not only elevates our cricketing landscape but also highlights the importance of sports in driving economic growth and community engagement.”

In line with Vision 2030, Zimbabwe is investing heavily in sports infrastructure to position the country as a regional sports hub.

Dr Munyanyiwa said plans are underway for the construction of a state-of-the-art cricket stadium in Victoria Falls, part of preparations for hosting major international tournaments in 2026 and beyond.

“Zimbabwe has already taken a positive stance to promoting sport through lobbying for investments in sport infrastructure. Development of a state-of-the-art cricket stadium is ongoing in Victoria Falls in preparation for cricket games earmarked for 2026/27 and beyond. In this regard, we invite you once again to Zimbabwe—this time to play your games in our majestic Victoria Falls,” he said.

Dr Munyanyiwa emphasised that Zimbabwe’s growing profile as a safe, welcoming, and competitive destination was helping the country reposition itself on the global tourism map.

“We are grateful for this opportunity to put Zimbabwe on the world map as a safe and competitive destination of choice. Going forward, you are more than welcome once again to consider Zimbabwe for more games, and we are ready as a country to forge more partnerships with you and other affiliate teams,” he said.

“We encourage you also to visit with your families and friends and even make Zimbabwe your second home. We will indeed be more than happy to receive you.”

The MCC’s visit,  their first since 1965   comes at a time when Zimbabwe is actively leveraging sports diplomacy to attract tourists, boost investment and enhance international cooperation.

Through such engagements, Zimbabwe aims to use sport not just as entertainment, but as a powerful tool for cultural exchange, national branding and socio-economic development.
