ZIMBABWE Junior golfers utilised home advantage to win the tri-angular series golf tournament against Zambia and Malawi at Chapman in Harare yesterday. The Zimbabwe Junior Golf Association developmental side was captained by Tafadzwa Nyamukondiwa who led by example, recording some of the lowest scores during the three-day event. Zimbabwe started the campaign on a high note, winning the opening foursomes on Monday by six points with Zambia managing two and Malawi had one point.
In the afternoon singles, Zimbabwe continued dominating scoring 9,5 points for a total 15,5 points on Sunday while Zambia recorded seven points as they had managed five points in the singles and Malawi continued to trail on 4,5 points.
The second day on Monday saw the hosts increase their points tally to 30,5 after gaining five points in the foursomes and 10 points in the afternoon singles. Zambia, on the other hand, were on 15,5 points with Malawi a distant third on eight.
The third and final day had singles only in the morning and it was during those section that the hosts accumulated a further eight points, Zambia got 4,5 and Malawi 5,5 to end the three-day tournament.
Zimbabwe then secured victory with 38,5 points, Zambia totalled 20 points and Malawi had 3,5 points.
The tri-nations golf tournament pits three neighbouring countries – Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe – in a tournament for players aged 18 years and under.
Zimbabwe are hosting the tournament at Chapman Golf Club and have fielded a young team that includes 15-year-old Nyamukondiwa, Tadiwanashe Dzuda, Tanai Chatambudza of Norton Country Club, Keith Phiri and Keith Banda of Bulawayo, Davison Zulu of Zvishavane and Kadoma’s Josh Du Preez.
Nyamukondiwa was one of the best players in the field as he managed to record a two over par on match day four.
Also in good form was Dzuda, who closed the event with a 76 yesterday while Davison Zulu had 78.
Zimbabwe team captain Nyamukondiwa said they are happy to have reclaimed the tri-nations from Zambia who won last year’s edition on home soil.
“I am happy that we worked as a team and everyone co-operated well and we are happy that we have managed to retain the trophy from Zambia.
“I think we have a bright future as junior golfers as we still have age on our side and we look forward to that future.”
