Award-winning Zimbabwean filmmaker Nico Abote has earned international recognition after his short film WEIGHT was selected for screening at the 2026 Silicon Valley African Film Festival (SVAFF), set to take place in San Jose, California, in the United States from October 8 to 11.
Released in the first half of 2026 as part of a pair of purpose-driven short films written and directed by Abote, WEIGHT tackles pressing social issues affecting communities, including mental health, substance abuse, youth unemployment and family dynamics.
Founded in 2010 by Nigerian filmmaker Chike Nwoffiah, SVAFF is an annual festival that celebrates films from Africa and the African diaspora. The event brings together filmmakers, critics and cinema enthusiasts through film screenings, workshops, panel discussions and African-themed marketplaces, creating a platform for authentic storytelling and cultural exchange.
Abote said the selection was a significant milestone for both the film and the team behind it.
“It’s always a wonderful feeling. We worked on stories affecting any community globally, so we’re delighted to see the film being afforded the chance to make its debut on the international platforms for the desired impact that we had for it,” he said.
He noted that WEIGHT was created with the intention of sparking conversations around issues that continue to affect families and communities across the world.
With more than two decades of experience in the film industry, Abote has built a reputation for telling impactful African stories while working on international productions. His 22-year career includes directing the Canadian reality television series Dance Matchmaker.
Beyond filmmaking, he continues to champion African storytelling through initiatives such as Play Afrika TV and My Afrika Magazine, using global platforms to amplify authentic narratives from the continent.
