THE Zimbabwean community living in Cape Town, together with the consulate, heeded the call to assist victims of Cyclone Idai with the first consignment having been sent to the intended beneficiaries.
The donations are meant to assist thousands of villagers who were affected by the deadly Cyclone Idai that hit the eastern parts of the country including Masvingo Province.
Close to 200 people were killed while thousands were left homeless and displaced by heavy storms which left Chimanimani area devastated — in what has become to be Zimbabwe’s worst natural disaster ever.
The donations which included clothes, blankets, shoes, groceries, pampers, sanitary pads and other household items have been couriered to Zimbabwe for free courtesy of Chihwa Tours — a Zimbabwean bus company plying the Cape Town-Harare route.
Zimbabwe’s consular-general Mr Bonface Mugobogobo witnessed the sending off the first batch of donations and commended the Zimbabwean community for coming together in times of crisis.
“We are indeed humbled and encouraged by the overwhelming response we have received from the Zimbabweans in Cape Town and some locals who contributed donations towards the people who were affected by Cyclone Idai. “We are still receiving more donations and we will be sending another consignment soon,” Mr Mugobogobo added.
