“SPORTING events play a massive role in showcasing the beauty that Zimbabwe possesses to the rest of the world. With the opportunity to host major international teams, come the chance to show them how beautiful the country is,” said a representative from the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA).

Zimbabwe, an epitome of African beauty, has become the perfect destination for travellers seeking an unforgettable trip. Its charm lies not only in its picturesque landscapes but also in the warm hospitality extended to all who visit. Last week, the 2023 Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifiers which were held across four venues in Harare and Bulawayo, were successfully concluded, further solidifying Zimbabwe’s reputation as a host for international events.

Ten teams from around the globe graced the tournament, turning it into one of the premier events on the cricket calendar. The occasion attracted hundreds, if not thousands of people to the country, allowing both the sport and its fans to bask in the beauty of Zimbabwe.

For some players, it was their first visit, while others returned after long periods, relishing the opportunity to experience Zimbabwean hospitality once again.

Among those who fell in love with the country was Scott Edwards, captain of the Netherlands’ cricket team. Edwards (26) expressed his team’s affection for Zimbabwe, reminiscing about the good memories they had created during their stay.

“The whole group loves Zimbabwe. We have had a lot of good memories here, the people are amazing, the support we got from the guys that were here (Queens Sports Club) and yeah, it’s a beautiful country,” said Edwards.

He said he eagerly looks forward to future tours, hoping to create more lasting memories.

Despite suffering a heartbreaking defeat at the hands of the Dutch, Scotland’s cricket team was also captivated by Zimbabwe’s allure. Head coach Doug Watson shared similar sentiments with Edwards, expressing his admiration for the country’s hospitality throughout their stay.

“It has been incredible. All the people have been very friendly, and we really loved our time in Zimbabwe,” said Watson, a testament to the warmth and kindness of the Zimbabwean people.

For Sri Lanka’s head coach, Chris Silverwood, returning to Zimbabwe after over a decade was an exhilarating experience. He expressed his joy at being back in the country and reconnecting with old colleagues. Silverwood had previously played and coached Eagles (then Mashonaland Eagles) before returning to England.

“First, it was great to be back after so long and I bumped into so many old faces. It has been great to catch up with people,” he said.
While Silverwood enjoyed meeting old friends, he and his Lankan side also had the opportunity to embark on an amazing safari adventure. The team visited one of Zimbabwe’s iconic parks, the Matobo National Park where they enjoyed the country’s wildlife.

As Zimbabwe continues to host more international events, the door remains wide open for many to experience 0the renowned Zimbabwean hospitality and explore its captivating safari destinations.

The country’s motto, “A world of wonders,” rings true and the country continues to invite visitors to enjoy the charm and beauty of Zimbabwe, an experience they will cherish for a lifetime. — @brandon_malvin
