THE Deputy Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Tongai Mnangagwa, has highlighted the significance of showcasing Zimbabwe’s national dress fabric internationally.
Speaking on Wednesday, at the ongoing Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) in Bulawayo, Deputy Minister Mnangagwa described the national fabric as a powerful symbol of Zimbabwean identity and culture. He made his remarks during an interview at the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) stand.
“We want to take the national dress fabric beyond our borders. This fabric is not just a piece of cloth; it’s a representation of our rich history, our values and our traditions,” he said.

Launched and championed by the First Lady, Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa, in 2021, the national dress fabric is a patriotic textile that embodies the spirit of Zimbabwean nationalism.
The Minister’s passion for the fabric was not only evident in his words, but also in his attire, as he proudly wore garments made from the material. He even shared a light-hearted encounter with a Turkish tourist, who had recognised him from a spirited “Meet and Greet” session at an airport, where he had been seen dancing in the national fabric.
“I met a Turkish tourist, who saw me dancing at a ‘Meet and greet’ session, and he said he enjoyed seeing the hospitality shown to foreign arrivals. But that’s what it’s all about — showcasing our culture and hospitality to the world. The national dress fabric is a patriotic symbol that we should be proud of. It represents our unity, our culture and our heritage.”

The Deputy Minister’s sentiments align with the #ExperienceZimbabwe campaign, which aims to promote the nation’s rich culture and heritage, internationally.
“Everyone is an ambassador of Zimbabwe under the #ExperienceZimbabwe garb,” Minister Mnangagwa said.
The Zimbabwe Tourism Authority has been retailing the national fabric at its various offices and, on occasion, partnering with the Ministry to distribute it freely to tourists. The fabric has gained considerable popularity among locals, with President Mnangagwa and members of his Cabinet frequently seen wearing it at official functions.
The ZITF, which this year has exceeded its targeted exhibitor numbers, has proven to be a significant milestone for Zimbabwe’s premier international trade exhibition.
“This year’s ZITF has surpassed our expectations in terms of exhibitor turnout. It’s a testament to the growing interest in Zimbabwe’s products and services,” said Minister Mnangagwa.
As the ZITF continues to draw exhibitors and visitors from around the world, the Minister reiterated the importance of promoting Zimbabwean culture and heritage.
“We want to showcase our unique culture and heritage to the world. We believe our national dress fabric is an essential part of that heritage, and we want to share it globally.”
The ZITF serves as a key platform for Zimbabwean businesses to present their products and services, and Minister Mnangagwa believes the national dress fabric plays a vital role in promoting the Zimbabwean brand.
“We want to take our national dress fabric to the world. We want people to learn about our culture, our heritage and our values.”
