Zimbabwe’s top amateur golfers, Samson Mavunga and Tadeous Lazaro, representing the nation at the International Pairs World Finals that ends today at the Sun International Golf Course in South Africa and have become, by default, Sports Tourism Ambassadors for the country.
“Sports tourism is a key driver for Zimbabwe’s growth and our two golfers competiting against the world’s best are by default our Sports Tourism Ambassadors,” said Deputy Minister of Tourism, Hon. Tongai Mnangagwa.
“Our athletes are ambassadors for the country, and as they compete internationally, they showcase not just talent, but the opportunities Zimbabwe offers to visitors and investors alike.”
The pair earned their place at the global event after winning the 2025 Sterling Zimbabwe Pairs National Finals at Mulota Hill Golf Club in Mhondoro Ngezi on September 27. Their balanced partnership—combining long, accurate drives and disciplined course management—has drawn positive attention at the world tournament.
“Every round here is a test, and every shot counts,” said Mavunga.
“We’re proud to carry Zimbabwe’s flag, and we hope our performance inspires greater support for sports tourism at home.”
Lazaro echoed the sentiment, saying their focus was on doing the country proud.
“The competition is tough, but our preparation and teamwork give us confidence. We want to make Zimbabwe proud.”
Hon. Mnangagwa said the golfers’ participation reflects how sport and tourism can work together to market Zimbabwe globally.
“When our athletes perform on the world stage, it tells a story about Zimbabwe’s passion, talent, and readiness to compete. Sports tourism is not only about attracting visitors—it’s about creating experiences that show the world our potential.”
He also encouraged private investors and the tourism industry to take advantage of such opportunities.
“Invest in our athletes, our courses, and the infrastructure that makes these events possible. Champions like Samson and Tadeous prove that Zimbabwe’s potential is limitless when talent meets opportunity.”
The International Pairs World Finals bring together top amateur golfers from around the world for several rounds of stroke play on one of South Africa’s most challenging courses. For Mavunga and Lazaro, each hole is a chance to show that Zimbabwean golf can compete—and succeed—on the global stage.
