ZIMBABWE rolled out the red carpet for international arrivals last week with a surprise welcome initiative at key entry points.

The collaborative effort between the Ministry of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, and the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) aims to create a lasting first impression on visitors.

The “meet and greet” programme provides invaluable information on tourism attractions, accommodation options, and local experiences, ensuring that travellers are well-equipped to embark on their Zimbabwean adventure.

Led by Minister Barbara Rwodzi, Deputy Minister Tongai Mnangagwa, Permanent Secretary Dr Takaruza Munyanyiwa, along with several ministry directors and officials from ZTA, the team was stationed at various entry points to greet visitors.

Key locations such as Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport, Robert Mugabe International Airport, Victoria Falls Internationl  Airport, Kazungula Border Post, Beitbridge Border Post, and Plumtree Border Post were filled with excitement.

Tourists from countries such as the United States, Germany, Singapore, the United Kingdom, Canada, South Africa, and Argentina, as well as those returning from the diaspora were pleasantly surprised at the entry points. Top officials welcomed them warmly, presenting beautiful gifts that included the national fabric. Officials engaged with travellers, listened to their plans, and shared insights about the breathtaking attractions located throughout the country.

Minister Rwodzi, in a video posted on the ministry’s social media platform, said: “We expect almost 3 million Zimbabweans to return home. A huge number of the diasporans are happy to be back home and we are happy to be welcoming them with an assurance that the economy is rolling over because of the money that they send.

“We appreciate what they are doing throughout the year and that they have chosen to come home and celebrate Christmas and New Year with us. Zimbabwe is a sleeping giant, Zimbabwe is waking up and Zimbabwe is beautiful and has the most hospitable people in the world.”
