Why Zimbabwe must embrace AI: Lessons from the shift to automatic cars

IN a rapidly evolving world, technological advancements are reshaping the way we live, work, and interact. Among these advancements, Artificial Intelligence (AI) stands out as a transformative force with the potential to revolutionise various sectors. However, in Zimbabwe, there remains a degree of resistance towards AI, reminiscent of the initial reluctance to adopt automatic cars over manual ones.

AI, with its ability to process vast amounts of data, learn from patterns, and make decisions, offers numerous benefits. From improving healthcare and education to enhancing business efficiency and driving economic growth, AI’s potential is immense. Yet, despite these advantages, there is a noticeable hesitation among some Zimbabweans to fully embrace this technology. This reluctance often stems from a fear of the unknown, concerns about job displacement, and a lack of understanding of AI’s capabilities.

Much like the initial resistance to automatic cars, which were viewed with suspicion and scepticism, AI is sometimes seen as a threat rather than an opportunity.

Automatic Car

The resistance to automatic cars provides a valuable lesson. When automatic transmissions were first introduced, many drivers preferred manual cars, believing them to be more reliable and offering greater control. However, over time, the convenience, ease of use, and technological advancements of automatic cars won over the sceptics. Today, automatic cars are widely accepted and preferred by many for their simplicity and efficiency. Similarly, resisting AI is a futile endeavour.

The global trend towards AI adoption is undeniable, and those who fail to keep pace risk being left behind. Just as automatic cars have become a standard feature in the automotive industry, AI is becoming an integral part of various sectors worldwide.

AI can drive economic growth by creating new industries and job opportunities. It can enhance productivity, streamline operations, and foster innovation, leading to a more competitive economy. AI can revolutionise healthcare by enabling early diagnosis, personalised treatment plans, and efficient management of medical records.

This can lead to better patient outcomes and a more effective healthcare system. AI-powered tools can provide personalised learning experiences, helping students to learn at their own pace and according to their individual needs. This can improve educational outcomes and bridge learning gaps.

AI can automate routine tasks, analyse large datasets, and provide insights that drive strategic decision-making. This can lead to increased efficiency, reduced costs, and improved customer satisfaction. AI can optimise farming practices through precision agriculture, leading to higher yields and more sustainable farming methods. This can enhance food security and support rural development.

To fully realise the benefits of AI, Zimbabweans need to overcome their resistance and embrace this technology.

This requires a concerted effort to educate the public about AI, address their concerns, and highlight the opportunities it presents. Government policies and initiatives that promote AI adoption, investment in AI research and development, and collaboration with international partners can also play a crucial role.
