ROBERT MUTSAUKI, a sports management consultant, has been appointed to unify Zimbabwe’s three golf associations.

He will merge the Zimbabwe Golf Association (men’s amateur), Zimbabwe Ladies Golf Union (women’s amateur), and Zimbabwe Professional Golfers Association into a single body overseeing all golf nationwide, emphasising a thorough, unhurried process for effectiveness.

“It’s a work in progress — we’ll see how it unfolds. These three bodies have already committed to the process. We are moving through the necessary phases, and we must follow due process. You can’t short-circuit it. It must come from the stakeholders; without their ownership and buy-in, it won’t succeed. It would exist only on paper. We want this to be implemented in a way that truly benefits golf in Zimbabwe.

“If we amalgamate all three, it will be a different story. I understand Kenya attempted this, but they rushed the process and are still trying to make it work. The advice I’ve received is that we must do it properly rather than hastily. There’s no need to rush, as going back would be a waste of resources. That’s why we’re following due process,” said Mutsauki.

The initiative has the full backing of the R&A, golf’s global governing body outside the Americas, which is closely observing the process as a potential model for other African nations. The R&A oversees the Rules of Golf (in conjunction with the USGA), stages major championships like The Open, and actively works to develop the sport globally.

“The R&A’s development manager has expressed strong interest in this process and is supporting it. They want it to succeed. If Zimbabwe manages to implement this successfully, it will serve as a template for other African countries. The R&A has decided that this is the direction to take,” Mutsauki said.

He firmly believes the sport’s best interests lie in this unification.

“Of course, there are concerns when it comes to amalgamation. People currently holding positions may wonder what will happen to them — but that’s a narrow view. We must focus on the bigger picture and prioritise the best interests of the sport over individual concerns. There are also gender representation issues within leadership, but those will be addressed in the new constitution,” he said.

Should the amalgamation succeed, a new constitution will be drafted and registered with the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC), followed by elections for office bearers of the yet unnamed unified body. Mutsauki highlighted inclusivity as a key benefit, confirming all three existing associations are fully committed to the process.

“There are many advantages to amalgamation. The most obvious is: why separate men’s and women’s amateur golf? We should be promoting inclusivity rather than maintaining divisions. Integration and inclusivity can only be achieved through amalgamation. Some may argue that professional golf differs from amateur golf — and there may be some truth to that — but in other countries, it’s all under one umbrella.

“Now imagine international bodies having to deal with three different organisations from Zimbabwe for one sport. The standard rule is one national federation per sport.

“When registering, international federations typically recognise only one national body. While exceptions have been made in the past, the trend is moving towards consolidation.”

There is currently no set timeline for the completion of the amalgamation process.
