After being nominated earlier in the year for the Best Newcomer Award at the BET awards, Australian-based Zimbabwean rapper Tkay Maidza has pulled off a coup by featuring American rap heavyweight Killer Mike in one of her songs.
Maidza grabbed the attention of the hip-hop world earlier this week when she announced that she was releasing an album in the next few months with a song featuring Killer Mike.A Mike is an American rap conscious rap heavyweight whose strong political views saw him emerge as the social media face and unofficial advisor of losing American democratic presidential race candidate Benny Sanders.
Mike first burst into the spotlight in the early 90s as an affiliate of the Dungeon Family, a musical grouping that housed the multi-platinum group Outkast.
The song the two worked on together is titled Carry On.
The 20-year-old rapper whose music is a fusion of hip-hop and pop, is the offspring of immigrant miners who moved to Australia when she was a child.
Her parents moved to Perth when she was five and lived in mining communities around Kalgoorlie and Whylla before settling in Adelaide six years ago.
Describing the collaboration Maidza, who has been dubbed Australiaas queen of rave rap, said that the song served to illustrate how she got over her troubles in life, with the American playing an advisory role to her throughout the three-and-a-half minute long song.
“Carry On is kind of about me going through troubles and he acts as a big brother, which is really cool.”
“I just meet a lot of new people and you just see a lot more things, which can be really cool but at the same time it’s really overwhelming,” she said in an interview.
