Zimcan guards threaten strike

Chipinge Correspondent
ZIMCAN, a leading security company in Zimbabwe has been hit by hard times, amid revelations that the company failed to pay its security guards their salary for the past three months.

At least 15 disgruntled security guards in Chipinge last week threatened to put down tools claiming that the company had failed to fulfil their pledge to pay their arrears back dated to September.

Some security guards who telephoned this publication said they have already approached by the security company owners in Harare notifying them that they would go on strike if their concerns were not attended to by end of December. They argue that the company was failing to pay security guards yet the companies’ clients pay on time. “We used to receive our money by end of the month but things turned sour in September when we heard by our colleagues dotted around the country that the security company is broke and planning to retrench.

“We hope that the company will pay us our salaries before retrenching us.

“We have confirmed that our clients are paying on time and there is no reason they are delaying our payments,” said a ZIMCAN security guard in Chipinge.

Another security guard who requested anonymity said they were planning to take legal action if they fail to reach a consensus with the employer.

“We have run out of ideas so that we get our salary, that’s why we approach you for publication so that our plight may be heard. We are also in the process of seeking redress from the labour courts so that we can recover our salaries on time.

“We were promised a good package some time ago but we were surprised that the company is paying us a paltry $200 each month.

“We will meet with our colleagues in Mutare and plan the way forward because we have discovered that the company is paying certain company workers they think are worth more than others,” he said.

Contacted for comment ZIMCAN security company manager, a Mr C Matambura, dismissed the allegations and said they had been paying their workers on time.

“The company has been consistent in paying its valued workers’ salaries since the beginning of the year.

“I think those workers who are raising this issue only want to tarnish our company reputation or they are being used by our enemies,” he said.
