THE ninth edition of the Zimpapers Cancer Power Walk took place at the Old Hararians Sports Club in Harare yesterday, drawing thousands of participants for a morning filled with energy and solidarity.
Running under the theme “Close the Care Gap”, the event provided a platform for cancer survivors to share their experiences, encourage early screening and inspire hope.
Speaking during the event, Zimpapers chief executive officer Mr Pikirayi Deketeke applauded the company’s partners for their support in making the event a success.
“We thank you for the profound assistance you rendered, which we hope will improve the health and lives of people affected by cancer,” he said.
“The proceeds will be extended to Island Hospice for palliative care, hence we are proud of this partnership.”
In an interview, Ms Patience Kativi, an ovarian cancer survivor, urged the Government to consider introducing a cancer levy. “Cancer treatment is incredibly expensive,” she said. “During my chemotherapy, I needed around US$1 000 every 21 days, which is beyond reach for many. A dedicated cancer fund could help many people access lifesaving treatments.”

Another participant, Mrs Jacky Pindu, encouraged women to prioritise regular breast cancer screening.
“I urge all women to get breast cancer checks at least twice a year,” she said.
“Awareness campaigns need to reach remote and rural areas as well, ensuring everyone is informed and proactive about their health.”
Mrs Maria Shurugwi, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in April 2021, advocated early detection and prompt treatment.

“I have been managing my condition with traditional herbs and natural foods,” she said. “I encourage all women to get screened and seek treatment early if diagnosed.”
Corporate sponsors for the event included West Property, who were the anchor sponsor; platinum sponsor FBC Holdings; and Sunny Yi Feng, the gold sponsor. Other supporters were Lobels, Dunlop Express Tyre Club, Premier Service Medical Aid Society and Ambulance Care and Evacuation. Harare Oncology Pharmacy’s pharmacist Ms Sandra Manjonjo emphasised the importance of early testing to ensure timely treatment.
The event featured free zumba sessions led by fitness trainer Zororo Nhira, along with free health checks, counselling and massages, creating a supportive and uplifting atmosphere for all involved.
