THE Zimpapers Charity Football tournament, held at Old Mutual Sports Club on Saturday, attracted a huge turn out from all stakeholders.
The event was the first to be hosted by ZTN and was officially opened by Zimpapers group chairman Tommy Sithole.
He was flanked by group CEO Pikirayi Deketeke.
All proceeds will go to the Copota School For The Blind.
Premiership sides Herentals and Simba Bhora pledged US$300 each for the charity cause.
The 12 team inaugural tournament was won by Mabvuku FC, who edged Toobs 2-0 in a tightly-contested match.
ZTN Head of Brand Awareness and Events Management, Rumbidzai Nderere, said there was overwhelming support from all stakeholders.
“The turnout today was more than we expected. People came in their numbers to support the cause, which is something which made ZTN very proud,” she said.
“The teams really committed themselves. We are hoping to make this an annual event and we are looking to host another tournament to be able to raise money for different charities next year.
“We would like to thank all our sponsors, all the teams that came out, and everyone who made this event a success.
“It’s really good when we have the whole Zimpapers executive here.
“They all came to support us, a little baby in the group. It means a lot to have the full support from our parents just like that.”
Mabvuku FC coach, David Taruvinga, said he was happy with the win.
“Our boys really put in a good shift and it paid off,” he said.
Toobs FC representative, Mbonisi Max Sibanda, said they will be looking forward to the next tournaments.
“We had a good game and enjoyed ourselves.
“We couldn’t win the final game as our opponents used their chances.
“As a corporate, we have been supporting charity events all along.”
