ZIMPAPERS Bulawayo branch on Thursday donated groceries to Kip Keino Children’s Home in Gwanda District as part of its 120 years celebrations.Kip Keino, founded by three Zimbabwean athletes in 2002, is located about 40km from Gwanda Town in Makwe area.
It has 41 underprivileged children that include orphans.
Handing over the donation on Thursday, Chronicle managing and production editor, Isaac Waniwa said the donation was part of giving back to the community that has over the years supported the newspaper company.
“This is part of our 120 years celebrations. We decided as part of our celebrations to identify needy institutions and Kip Keino was one of them. What is very encouraging is that this home was initiated by Zimbabweans who we want to commend for their foresight. We are very encouraged by such foresight.
“Through this small donation, we want you to join us in celebrating our 120 years of existence,” said Waniwa.
He applauded the home for providing parental guidance to the chidren that has seen some of them attaining professional qualifications.
“It is very encouraging that some who passed through your hands are making a meaningful contribution to Zimbabwe’s economy. I’m told some of your children occupy very senior positions at companies in and outside the country,” Waniwa said.
Chronicle circulation manager Vethi Tshuma said a good relationship had been started between Zimpapers and the home that must be nurtured for years to come.
One of the home’s founders who is a member of the board of trustees, Zibusiso Nyoni said they were grateful to the company. He said the donation was an early Christmas for the children.
“This is a very rare occasion for us because you have become one of the few who remember us. We are grateful for this donation. This is an early Christmas present for us,” he said.
Margaret Sibanda, the board of directors committee member who represented the board chairperson Sizwile Nyathi could not hide her joy after receiving the assortment of groceries.
“As Makwe community we are very thankful. Chronicle has put us on the map. You have really uplifted us and we can’t thank you enough,” she said.
The donated groceries included mealie meal, cooking oil, washing soap, matemba, beans, salt, sugar and bread.
Chronicle turned 120 years last month.
