Zimpapers driver Silas Bunu’s killer slapped with 32 months jail sentence

THE 19-year-old Bulawayo man who killed a Zimpapers staff member in an accident along Luveve Road near Mzilikazi suburb early this month has been sentenced to 24 months in prison.

Melusi Nkomo from Nketa 6 suburb pleaded guilty to culpable homicide and driving a motor vehicle without a valid license.

About two weeks ago, Nkomo and his accomplice Shelton Dube (19) from Nkulumane suburb were slapped with six months jail sentence each after being convicted of stealing the vehicle that got involved in the accident.

The pair will serve an effective three months for the offence after three months were suspended for three years on condition they do not commit a similar offence within the same period.

On Friday (today) Western Commonage magistrate, Mr Archie Wochiwunga, further sentenced Nkomo to 24 months in prison for culpable homicide, of which 12 months were suspended for five years on condition he does not commit the same offence.

Should he repeat the same offence he will be sentenced without an option of paying a fine. On count two of driving without a valid license, Nkomo was sentenced to two months in prison.

Count one and count two run concurrently.

Combined, Nkomo will effectively spend one year and five months behind bars.
