ZIMBABWEAN journalists Kudakwashe Hunda, Veronica Gwaze and student Danai Kwedza yesterday flew the country’s flag high after winning top awards at the SADC Regional Awards ceremony held here.
Hunda and Gwaze, who are both Zimpapers staffers, scooped first-place awards in the photographic and print media categories, respectively, while Kwedza came second in the SADC Tertiary Institution Essay Competition.

In an interview from her base in Harare, Gwaze said she was thrilled to receive the regional recognition.
“I am elated to make it to such a big stage, an award which speaks to the recognition of my works,” she said.
“I feel overjoyed for raising not only the Zimpapers brand to the regional podium but also raising the national flag of the Republic of Zimbabwe to cap President Mnangagwa’s SADC chairmanship tenure in style.
“Lastly I would also like to express my sincere gratitude to my Editors and mentors who held my hand since the day I joined journalism; their efforts did not go to waste.
“This is for Zimpapers and for Zimbabwe,” she said.
On his part, Hunda, who also won the same award last year, said he felt honoured to have delivered for both Zimbabwe and Zimpapers.
“It was such an honor being assigned to be the SADC official Photographer during our country and President Mnangagwa’s Chairmanship of the regional bloc.
“I learnt a lot in terms of my work and gained valuable experience. Zimbabwe hosted a very successful 7th SADC Industrialisation Week and this became my entry for the SADC 2025 media awards.
“l am so happy that l gave my country a 100 percent record in the photography category during President Mnangagwa’s Chairmanship.
“May I also express my gratitude to Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Permanent Secretary Nick Mangwana, Chief Director Jonathan Gandari, Director International Communication Services Richard Mahomva and Zimpapers acting CEO Mr William Chikoto for their support and encouragement,” he said.
