Two Zimpapers’ Masvingo branch workers escaped death by a whisker when the vehicle they were travelling in veered off the road and hit a tree along Ngundu-Tanganda Road on Sunday.
Mr Valentine Dzihwema, the firm’s sales and circulation officer for Masvingo office was driving the company’s Ford Ranger when he allegedly lost control of the vehicle at the 75-kilometre peg near Triangle sugarcane estates around 11am.
He was in the company of the cashier for Masvingo office Mrs Evidence Hungwe.
They both sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Collin Saunders Hospital in Triangle before being transferred to the Avenues Clinic and Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals in Harare.
They were reported to be in a stable condition.
Acting Masvingo provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa confirmed the accident.
He said Mr Dzihwema was driving the single cab vehicle in the company of Mrs Hungwe when the accident occurred.
He said on reaching the 75km peg, Mr Dzihwema lost control of the vehicle and it veered off to the right side of the road before hitting a tree.
Asst Insp Dhewa said Mr Dzihwema sustained head and leg injuries, while Mrs Hungwe suffered a fractured right leg and bruises all over her body.
“I can confirm receiving a report of a near fatal road accident involving a Zimpapers truck,” he said.
“Two occupants, including the driver were seriously injured.”
