Zimpapers to host safe driving campaign and conference

Zimpapers and transport operators will hold the safe driving campaign and conference this Friday to address the alarming increase in road traffic accidents countrywide.

The conference will run under the theme, “Reduce Road Carnage: Stop. Think. Act.”

In an interview with Zimpapers public relations and communications manager Mrs Pauline Matanda said the conference will address the recent surge in traffic accidents and ways to mitigate them.

“It is imperative for us as a nation to collectively address the issue of road accidents, which have taken a toll on our communities,” she said.

“The responsibility of ensuring road safety should not fall on drivers alone but should be a concerted effort that includes Government agencies, private companies, local communities, and every road user, thus Zimpapers have taken the burden of trying to address the issue through this conference.”

Road traffic accidents in Zimbabwe occur every 15 minutes, with at least 150 people dying every month.

A survey conducted by the Traffic Safety Council has shown that most of the accidents are attributed to reckless driving, inadequate enforcement of traffic laws and use of defective vehicles, among other factors.
