ZIMPOST last Friday launched its mobile service in Chipinge aimed at improving service delivery in marginalised parts of the country. Speaking during the official launch of Zimpost mobile post at Tafara Primary School in Chipinge East, the Minister of Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services, Cde Webster Shamu, said his ministry had fully embraced Zim-Asset by improving service delivery from all its parastatals.

He said his ministry was there to bridge the gap between those in town and rural areas by bringing all services close to the people.

“This mobile post office is one of the 15 mobile caravans which were bought by Government meant to improve service delivery in rural communities in the country. This new mobile post office is important to the people of Chipinge in particular as we witness some of the fruits of the people-centred policies of the ruling party and Government,” he said.

Cde Shamu said Government was racing against time to meet ICT international convections which it ratified.

“With the liberalisation and deregulation of the sector, Zimpost has continued to carry out the obligation of providing postal services to underserved and non-commercial areas of the country on behalf of the Government of Zimbabwe.

“This is done to ensure that Zimbabweans from all corners of this country have access to basic communication services in line with the UN Convections that Government signed. I am urging those communities not to let this service down by guarding it jealously,” he said.

In an interview, Zimpost managing director Mr Douglas Zimbango said his organisation had diversified its services to fight for its market share in the world of technology.

“Zimpost has received funds from Government under the Universal Services Fund (USF), which is administered by the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ). The company managed to improve its system where we are now able to transport goods in the fastest way.

“We have bought state-of-the-art trucks which will be distributed throughout the country to ferry parcels. We have struck a deal with South African Post Office where we agreed on a facility to transfer cash from Zimbabweans working there to their loved ones and families back home,” he said.

The event was attended by all other four parastatals, Tel-One, Net-One, Zarnet and Powertel, which all promised to improve service delivery in  marginalised areas in the country.
