Speaking before commissioning the bus, Zimpost managing director Mr Douglas Zimbago said the emergence of new technology had affected traditional mailing business.
“It is important that we remain relevant to our customers and the economy. The emergence of faster technologies has crippled our business but we are introducing this post bus service so that we improve our operations,” said Mr Zimbago.
He said the bus was going to eliver and transport passengers along the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls route.
“The service is mainly for efficient delivery of mail but passengers remain a component as the money generated from passengers would assist the company. Passengers will be charged $15 for a trip.
“I would also like to advise our customers that our offices will be open everyday from 7am to 6pm so we can speed up the process of acquiring vehicle licences.
“I urge them to come and renew their licences because we are dedicated to serving them on time so they avoid clashing with the police,” said Mr Zimbago.
In March last year the postal company launched the first post bus service, a 63-seater coach plying the Harare-Masvingo route, which also provides transport to passengers at low cost.
Globally the post bus strategy has been acknowledged as one of the most effective and reliable means of transport and cost-effective way of mail conveyance.
Recently the company has been struggling as usage of physical mail, also known as snail mail, has significantly dropped due to use of the Internet and other technologies like mobile phones.
Internet-based communication systems like Facebook, Twitter, Skype, Yahoo talk, G-talk, instant messaging and others have over the years side-swiped social mail business.
Zimpost has had to diversify rom its core business including venturing into real estate to stay afloat.
As another adaptation measure, Zimpost has integrated new technologies through operating phone shops, Internet cafes and sale of airtime recharge cards across its network of branches.
Zimpost also offers agency services to a number of companies in insurance and banking services using its wide postal network.
