Mthabisi Tshuma in BAMBADZI, BULILIMA
HISTORY was made at Bambadzi Shopping Centre in Bulilima District, Matabeleland South province, on Saturday when a drone took to the skies carrying a parcel to Masendu Digital Centre as Zimpost launched its drone delivery service.
The launch, held on October 10, marks a partnership between Zimpost and Drone Solutions aimed at using technology to complement traditional postal services and improve access to communities, particularly in hard-to-reach rural areas.
The demonstration between Bambadzi Shopping Centre and Masendu Digital Centre highlighted the potential of drone technology to provide more flexible delivery options as the postal service explores new ways of reaching customers.
Speaking at the launch, Minister of Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services Tatenda Mavetera said technology must deliver tangible benefits to communities.
“The Zimpost drone demonstration from Masendu Digital Centre to Bambadzi also shows what innovation can offer. I commend Zimpost, Drone Solutions and the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe. Aviation approvals, safety, reliability and cost must guide expansion.
“Where medical deliveries are proposed, the relevant health authorities must be involved. Every new technology must prove its value to the community,” said Minister Mavetera.
Zimpost Postmaster-General Mr Maxwell Chitendeni said the launch opened up new possibilities for the organisation and offered a glimpse of its future.
“Today’s occasion is particularly significant as Zimpost launches the Drone Delivery Service in partnership with Drone Solutions. We are not simply launching a drone. We are launching a new possibility.
“The initiative demonstrates our willingness to use technology to complement traditional delivery systems, explore faster and more flexible logistics solutions and improve access to communities,” he said.
Mr Chitendeni said Zimpost also planned to use artificial intelligence in its distribution network, with algorithms helping to determine the best delivery routes in cities.
“The launch here in Bambadzi sends a clear message: Innovation must not remain in major cities. It must reach our communities,” he said.
He said the Smart Post Office was a national concept intended to benefit both urban and rural communities.
Mr Chitendeni said partnerships with Government, regulators, technology companies, financial institutions, businesses, farmers and small and medium enterprises would be essential to the organisation’s transformation.
“Zimpost cannot transform alone. Transformation requires partnerships with Government, regulators, technology companies, financial institutions, businesses, farmers, SMEs and communities,” he said.
He acknowledged the support of Drone Solutions, the Ministry of ICT, Postal and Courier Services, the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ), the Zimpost board, management, employees and other strategic partners.
“The Post has always adapted to change. As technology, e-commerce, automation and drones reshape the economy, we must embrace these opportunities,” said Mr Chitendeni.
