THE Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) has deployed additional staff to some ports of entry to assist in the clearance of travellers and cargo during the festive season, an official has said.
This comes after Zimra announced that they are expecting more visitors this festive season compared to last year, as more people have been able to secure proper documents for their stay in South Africa and therefore are visiting during the festive period.
Zimra’s head of corporate communications Mr Canisio Mudzimu said the move was aimed at ensuring that there was no congestion and delays at all points of entry.
“The Zimbabwe Revenue Authority has deployed additional staff to some ports of entry, which include Plumtree and Beitbridge border posts to assist in the clearance of travellers and cargo during the festive season,” said Mr Mudzimu.
He said they have also embarked on several measures to curb smuggling at the country’s ports of entry.
“Some of the measures include post-importation verifications and audits, road blocks and borderline patrols in collaboration with law enforcement agencies, risk profiling, use of non-intrusive inspection equipment (scanners) and use of the Canine Unit, among others.
“In line with its zero-tolerance to corruption, Zimra uses various strategies to fight the scourge. These measures include the toll-free hotline, which individuals can use to anonymously report corruption,” Mr Mudzimu said.
This month, Zimra introduced an electronic Temporary Import Permit (e-TIP) mobile app meant to facilitate smooth clearance at the border posts for visitors coming to Zimbabwe to apply for their vehicle Temporary Import Permits online, from anywhere in the world prior to their arrival.
In August this year, Zimra surpassed the 2017 third quarter revenue performance and attributed the positive performance to higher collections in Value Added Tax (VAT) on local sales and imports, Individual Tax, Excise Duty and Company Tax.
