The Zimbabwe Revenue Authority Trade Union yesterday launched a programme to educate its members on their rights and enhance productivity. The trade union’s president, Mr John Chirenda, told a gathering to commemorate the third anniversary of the union that it was important to conscientise members on their rights and role in the professional collection of revenue in the country.
“We have decided to educate our membership about workers’ rights as well as educate them on the importance of producing good and positive results,” he said.
“The trade union believes in dialogue. It is against this background that the trade union has embarked on a programme to make sure that our membership understands their rights and those of their employer.”
The “Rights and Productivity Education” programme which was developed with the support of prominent labour lawyer Mr Rodgers Ma- tsikidze aims to enhance professionalism as well as motivating staff to collect revenue and facilitate trade efficiency.
Mr Chirenda called for unionism that promotes the interests and rights of workers.
“Unionism is about teaming up to advance the interests and rights of workers in a particular industry,” he said. Unionism is not about fighting with the employer but discussing and negotiating with the employer to improve working conditions.” He urged members of his union to shun corruption.
“Employees should shun corrupt activities and help boost productivity and provide service in a transparent and professional manner,” Mr Chirenda said. ZIMRATU has a membership of 1 570 workers from both technical and non-technical sections of ZIMRA stationed all over the country.
