The United Nations (UN) has issued a huge endorsement for Zimbabwe’s drought mitigation strategy following the El Nino-induced food supply disruptions and noted that there are lessons to be learnt from the Zimbabwean example for the global community.
The glorious assessment was delivered by the UN Climate Crisis Coordinator for the El Nino La Nina Response and Assistant Secretary-General Ms Reena Ghelani after paying a courtesy call on Vice President Dr Constantino Chiwenga this morning.
Ms Ghelani has been in the country to get first-hand appreciation from communities and the Government as well as assure the UN’s support of the Government’s efforts.
With the global pulse of the international climate crisis and El Nino, La Nina’s response under her ambit, the praise by Ms Ghelani – who is a UN Assistant Secretary-General – speaks volumes about Zimbabwe’s progress.
Ms Ghelani fielded questions from the media after she met with VP Chiwenga, and shared some of her observations from her visit to Zimbabwe.
“We were discussing with the Honourable Vice President the Government’s plans to support the people of Zimbabwe through this drought and also build a future for them so that the country is supporting others and dealing with what we expect of future droughts with resilience,” said Ms Ghelani.
“We went to visit some of the programs that the Government and the United Nations are doing in support of those efforts.
“I think there are lessons to be learnt here, one thing the Government did is declare an emergency earlier on, it was in April and that allowed a trigger of action also from the United Nations in support.
“Early interventions save lives and that is one of the biggest lessons.”
Ms Ghelani was accompanied by the UN Resident Coordinator in Zimbabwe Ambassador Edward Kallon.
