Zimbabwe’s Tongoona to coach Southern Africa Team Tour

FORMER Zimbabwe Davis Cup tennis player, Gwinyai Tongoona, has been selected by the International Tennis Federation to serve as the coach for the Under-16 Southern Africa Team Tour.

The tour starts from July 21 to August 11 2024. Tennis Zimbabwe extended their congratulations to the former Davis Cup player and captain, who is also a Level Three (CHP) High Performance Coach and former ITF Regional Development Centre High Performance Coach.

“Tennis Zimbabwe congratulates Gwinyai Tongoona on his appointment by the International Tennis Federation as the Coach for the Under 16 Southern Africa Team Tour from July 21 to August 11. Gwinyai Tongoona is a High Performance Coach, Level Three (CHP), a former Davis Cup player and captain and former ITF Regional Development Centre High Performance Coach,” read the statement from Tennis Zimbabwe’s social media platforms.

Gwinyai is widely regarded as a legendary figure and a shining example of the success achieved through Tennis Zimbabwe’s development initiatives during the late 1980s and 1990s. He was part of the Zimbabwean team with Genius Chidzikwe, Vusa Khonza-Majola, Kevin Ullyett, Byron, and Wayne Black.
