Zimbabwe was yesterday joined by other countries from the region to commemorate SADC Anti-Sanctions Day.
The commemoration echoed with a resounding and unified call for the lifting of the illegal and punitive sanctions imposed on the nation.
As we observe Anti-Sanctions Day, we witness the Zimbabwean Government’s profound recognition of the pivotal role, resilience and extraordinary importance of the nation’s youth in shaping its future.
This year’s theme, “Harnessing the Youth for Accelerated Socio-Economic Development in the Fight Against Sanctions,” underscores Government’s unwavering commitment to empower the younger generation.
It highlights the remarkable odyssey undertaken by our youth – a journey marked by determination, innovation, and resilience – as they forge a path towards resilient advancement and a prosperous Zimbabwe, free from the constraints of sanctions.
The term “odyssey” emphasises the challenging and transformative journey that Zimbabwe’s youth must undertake on their path towards resilient advancement, despite the burdens imposed by sanctions.
Inspired by Homer’s epic poem, “The Odyssey,” which narrates Odysseus’ 10-year journey to return home after the Trojan War, the parallel between the youth of Zimbabwe and Odysseus lies in their shared qualities of determination, innovation and resilience.
Like Odysseus, the youth possess the vigour and visionary spirit necessary to drive economic growth and shape the future of Zimbabwe.
Zimbabwe’s youth are not passive bystanders; they are dynamic catalysts for change and emerging leaders who embark on a transformative odyssey towards a brighter future.
Like Odysseus, the youth possess the vitality, innovation and visionary spirit required to drive economic growth across diverse sectors.
Recognising their invaluable contributions and empowering them to spearhead Zimbabwe’s journey towards resilient advancement is of utmost importance.
To embrace the challenges posed by sanctions, Zimbabwe’s youth must cultivate a culture of hard work, critical thinking, and innovation.
Our youth can draw inspiration from the country’s freedom fighters who, as young individuals, overcame immense hardships during the war of liberation.
These courageous heroes serve as a powerful source of motivation, reminding our youth that they too possess the strength and resilience to overcome challenges.
By embracing the spirit of those who came before them, our youth are empowered to forge their own path and contribute to the journey towards progress and advancement in Zimbabwe.
Sanctions, although burdensome, can be seen as an opportunity for innovative solutions and the development of critical thinking skills.
It is an opportunity to foster homegrown innovation.
Education stands as a cornerstone, playing a pivotal role in unlocking the boundless potential of our youth’s journey towards resilient advancement, especially in the face of sanctions.
Government has demonstrated its profound recognition of education’s pivotal role in national development and youth empowerment by making significant investments to enhance and expand educational opportunities.
In particular, Government has implemented reforms, policies, and programmes, such as the Heritage-based Education 5.0 model, specifically tailored to address the challenges faced by the education sector.
Efforts have been made to enrich the curriculum, ensuring its relevance and responsiveness to the changing needs of the economy.
By investing in education, Government not only empowers the youth, but also strengthens the resilience of the nation as a whole.
Education 5.0 provides the necessary tools and knowledge for young individuals to overcome challenges and contribute to the country’s development, even in the face of sanctions. It fosters critical thinking, innovation, and adaptability, equipping the youth to navigate and thrive in adverse circumstances.
To fully harness the potential of our youth’s journey towards resilient advancement, it is imperative to nurture an environment that encourages their innovative ideas and provides mentorship and support.
Collaboration among Government, civil society organisations and the private sector is crucial.
By facilitating access to funding, mentorship programmes and platforms for networking and knowledge exchange, we can navigate the challenges of this journey and unlock the full potential of our youth in contributing towards realising the country’s vision of becoming an Upper Middle-Income Economy by 2030.
As we reflect on Anti-Sanctions Day and the journey that lies ahead, let us celebrate the audacity and resilience of our youth.
Their unwavering determination to build a prosperous Zimbabwe, liberated from the constraints of sanctions, serves as a profound inspiration.
It is crucial to recognise their achievements, both large and small, and highlight their positive impact on our nation’s journey. By celebrating their accomplishments, we ignite a spark that inspires others to join the cause and contribute to Zimbabwe’s journey of resilient advancement.
In Zimbabwe, the journey towards lasting progress and resilient advancement, unburdened by sanctions, rests upon the shoulders of our youth. Their innovation and unwavering commitment to progress serve as the driving forces that will shape our nation’s destiny.
