A FINANCE clerk at the Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (Zimsec) has appeared in court on allegations of stealing US$27 860 from the organisation over a period of three months.

Tavirai Tafireyi was arraigned before Harare magistrate Ms Ruth Moyo on charges of theft.

He was granted US$200 bail and is set to return to court on July 2.

The complainant in the matter is Zimsec, represented by its Security and Loss Control manager Mr James Nyabonde.

According to the State, the matter came to light on June 2, when Absorum Tevera, a bookkeeper and Tafireyi’s supervisor, detected irregularities in daily banking receipts submitted by Tafireyi.

Suspicious of the anomalies, Tevera informed the finance controller, Mr Blessing Joshua Shoko and together they conducted a spot check at Tafireyi’s workstation.

During the inspection, they discovered that Tafireyi was in possession of two receipt books, numbered 200 and 206.

It was revealed that Tafireyi was using one receipt book to record transactions officially, handing over the corresponding cash to the organisation’s cash office.

However, the second receipt book was allegedly being used to issue unofficial receipts, allowing Tafireyi to pocket the cash for personal gain.

Investigations revealed that between February 24 and June 2, Tafireyi had allegedly stolen a total of US$27 860 through this double-receipting scheme.

None of the stolen funds have been recovered, leading to his arrest.
