THE Zimbabwe National Road Administration (Zinara) has missed its target to complete the Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo (JMN) road in Harare by the end of last year as initially promised. Zinara attributed failure to complete the road formerly known as Airport Road to wet weather, a condition it said has also affected other road works.
The government handed over construction of the road to the roads authority last year after a private contractor struggled to construct it for the past six years.
In a press statement yesterday, Zinara said they are no longer able to complete the project due to heavy rains that have been pounding the capital in the past week.
“The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development in conjunction with the Zimbabwe National Road Administration would like to advise the motoring public that due to persistent rains, we’re no longer able to complete Phase 1 of the Harare Airport (Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo) by December 31, 2014. We’re not able to make Asphalt mix with wet aggregate stones under such conditions,” reads the statement.
“The wet spell has also affected other projects such as the Plumtree-Bulawayo-Harare-Mutare highway. Motorists are, however, reminded to drive with due care and attention as these roads are still construction sites.”
Zinara repaired more than 20 roads throughout the country under the government’s $2 million trunk road maintenance programme as part of efforts to curb road carnage. The programme focused on pothole patching, mending of edge breaks and road markings.
