Zinara transport manager George Chamwaura said the inspection would be conducted in partnership with the ZRP and the Vehicle Inspection Department.
“Currently, few car owners have registered their vehicles compared to the previously impressive turn ups hence the need for this inspection in the hope that registration numbers will bounce back to normal,” he said.
Chimwaura warned vehicle owners that the 30-day grace period payment plan was not a warranty to drive the vehicle.
“The 30-day-payment plan only means the vehicle owner will not be penalised during those 30 days after the license has expired and does not mean the vehicle is free to be driven on the roads,” he said.
“Motorists caught travelling without a registration plate will be penalised and vehicles impounded,” he said.
Meanwhile an exercise to make vehicle registration easier and efficient is underway as a way of encouraging motorists to register their vehicles.
“We have introduced licenses that are functional for a year as a way of pushing motorists to register their vehicles,” said Chimwaura, adding the month of June was dedicated to the inspection.
“We encourage motorists to renew their vehicle licenses to avoid inconveniences as this inspection will be carried out when most people are travelling to and from their respective work places” he said.
A similar road inspection of this nature conducted in March this year saw Zinara impounding 432 vehicles whilst 348 motorists paid license fees on the spot. — New Ziana.
