ZINJAZIYAMLUMA, a Zimbabwean maskandi musician based in South Africa, is making a notable mark on the South African music scene, particularly within the Maskandi genre. His recent performance at the Mother of All Festival (MMF) Maskandi in Durban on the April 5 served as a prime example of his increasing influence.
The annual festival, organised by Ukhozi FM, South Africa’s leading radio station owned by the South African Broadcasting Corporation and boasting over 10 million listeners, invites Maskandi music enthusiasts to vote for their favourite artistes. Only the top 30 musicians, as voted for by the public, are selected to perform at the festival, with the winner driving away in a Toyota Quantum. For the second consecutive year, Zinjaziyamluma, who hails from Tsholotsho, was voted into the top 30, securing a sought-after spot at the prestigious event.

His performance, which included popular tracks from his album Kubhulwa Uphoko Lwakasilima, such as Vela Bakubone (featuring Maskandi legend Shwi), Useyinyoka, and Kwasa Singalele, left the audience thoroughly enthralled. Despite finishing in sixth place, Zinjaziyamluma’s presence on the stage at such a high-profile affair underscored his growing prominence and the high regard, in which his music is held across South Africa.
From his base in Johannesburg, Zinjaziyamluma expressed his gratitude for the support he has received, acknowledging that the festival was one of the best-organised performances he has ever been a part of. He stated that his appearance was not solely about competing but also about establishing himself as a top-calibre performer worthy of recognition amongst South Africa’s leading Maskandi artistes.
“The energy from the fans made this experience unforgettable. It was never about the competition for me; it was about showing that I’m a great performer, who deserves to be counted among the best in the Maskandi genre.

With his distinct style and sound, Zinjaziyamluma has been making a significant impact in the Maskandi scene. His tracks have garnered substantial airplay across several prominent platforms, including KwaZulu-Natal television stations, uKhozi FM, Soweto Television and Tshwane Television, among others. This widespread exposure has played a key role in his rising popularity and growing recognition within the industry.
He also reflected on the valuable lessons he learnt at the festival, where he interacted with influential figures such as Shwi, Thokozani Langa and Khuzani.
“There was so much to learn at the event. We had esteemed guests, including the legendary Shwi, Thokozani Langa and Khuzani, individuals whose accomplishments we admire and aspire to achieve one day. What stood out to me was how Maskandi musicians are united in their efforts to elevate the genre,” said Zinjaziyamluma.
On his appeal to audiences in South Africa, Zinjaziyamluma said: “This means that the message I spread through my music is powerful. It’s a reminder that music can transcend borders and connect people from all walks of life.”
