CALL him a man chased and bitten by dogs — that’s what his name “Zinja Ziyamluma” means in English and his maskandi music is setting the pace while others follow behind.
Born Mxolisi Mavundla and raised in Tsholotsho he attended Dongwe Primary School and Dinyane Secondary School in the same district. Growing up he always had an artistic sense.
“I was a soccer fan and an imbube artiste as well as a member of the local Zinkanyezi Zezulu group back in 2008. 2013 is when I ventured into maskandi music,” he said.
It was not always fun, some days he would wake up in the slums of music rejection but he did not throw in the towel.
“The journey was not easy and luckily I made it. I now have five albums, three DVDs and five awards. In South Africa I perform before soccer matches in famous stadia such as the Moses Mabhida,” he said.
On his road to stardom he worked with legends in the genre such as Bonakele, Zanefa Ngidi and Mlethwa Majola.
He earned the stage name Zinja Ziyamluma because when he was young dogs used to bite him a lot.
He has his homecoming show in Tsholotsho that takes place every year and it has been going on for six years and this year it will be on 26 December.
