VANDALISM targeting the Nyamandlovu aquifer boreholes has dropped sharply after the Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA) installed 22 high-tech alarm systems to protect key infrastructure.
The alarms were fitted to 22 of the 29 transmitters powering the aquifer boreholes in a joint operation with the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC).
Speaking during a tour of the Epping pump station, ZINWA’s director of Engineering and Hydrological Services, Engineer Takudza Makwangudze, said the interventions were paying off.
“We have seen a significant reduction in vandalism since the alarm systems were installed. In addition, we have put in automatic switches for the boreholes and this has boosted operational efficiency,” said Makwangudze.
As a result, ZINWA has dramatically increased water supplies to Bulawayo, now pumping a record 25,8 megalitres per day, up from lows of just three megalitres.
The visit was led by Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development Minister Dr Anxious Masuka, who was accompanied by Deputy Minister of Defence, Retired Brigadier Levy Mayihlome.
Officials said the project was a classic example of a “whole of Government approach,” combining resources to tackle service delivery challenges.
“This is a step forward in protecting critical infrastructure and ensuring Bulawayo has reliable water supply,” added Makwangudze.
