THE Zimbabwe Media Commission (ZMC) has highlighted gaps that exist in the ZMC Act saying there is need to implement the new Bill and address the issues.
Speaking during a panel discussion on media law reform process at the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ) “Meet the Employer” media indaba that is underway in Harare, ZMC chairperson Professor Ruby Magosvongwe said the Commission was relying on goodwill by journalists and citizens.
She however said media reform is an ongoing process.
“There are gaps in the ZMC Act which we hope the Bill will cure as there are no provisions for a number of issues,” she said.
Prof Magosvongwe said there is no provision for accreditation of journalists, regulation of social media and artificial intelligence, term limits for commissioners and other glaring gaps.
She said there is a need for standardisation of training and qualifications for journalists for professionalism.
The ZMC Bill is one of the media reforms being implemented as Government seeks to align some pieces of legislation.
