THE Zimbabwe Mercantile Exchange (ZMX) and Grain Marketing Board (GMB) have announced a strategic partnership to roll out a national Warehouse Receipt System (WRS) to boost agricultural market efficiency and enhance farmers’ access to financial services.

The initiative enables self-financed farmers and producers, who are not under the Presidential Input Programme (PIP) or the Agricultural and Rural Development Authority (ARDA) scheme, to store their produce at certified warehouses and access financial services using warehouse receipts.

Under this collaboration, GMB is availing 10 certified warehouses across the country—Aspindale, Concession, Banket, Chegutu, Gweru, Bulawayo, Norton, Lion’s Den, Magunje, and Murehwa—as part of the ZMX WRS platform.

Speaking jointly, ZMX chief executive officer Mr Collen Tapfumaneyi and GMB CEO Dr Edson Badarai encouraged farmers to take advantage of the system.

“This platform empowers farmers by providing options to sell immediately, access credit, or procure inputs using grain receipts as collateral,” they said.

Under this system, farmers who choose to deliver their grain will receive a warehouse receipt, which functions as both a security and a financial instrument.

It gives farmers the option to sell their grain immediately on the ZMX auction or to use the receipt as collateral to access credit facilities.

Furthermore, the receipt can be used to buy agricultural inputs such as seeds, fertilisers, and agrochemicals.

To participate, farmers must open a free ZMX account via USSD, mobile app, or online platform.

After booking a delivery to a certified warehouse, farmers will receive a warehouse receipt—issued upon grading and weighing—that can be used for trade, credit, or input procurement on the ZMX marketplace.

Officials say the move will help stabilise grain supply chains, promote price transparency and contribute to national food security.
