The Zimbabwe National Organisation of Associations and Residents Trust (ZNOART) is expected to tour sewer hotspots in Chitungwiza and address journalists as part of its ongoing campaign for improved service delivery and the protection of public health and the environment.
The tour follows the expiry of a 72-hour ultimatum that ZNOART issued to the Chitungwiza Municipality 30 days ago, calling on the local authority to urgently address the town’s sewer crisis.
ZNOART national chairman, Mr Shepherd Shalvar Chikomba, said the inspection also comes in the wake of a directive by the Local Government and Public Works Minister Daniel Garwe, requiring struggling local authorities to submit detailed turnaround plans aimed at improving service delivery and addressing persistent governance challenges.
“Because Chitungwiza Municipality has failed to demonstrate the leadership and capacity required to address these challenges, we call upon the executive and councillors to take responsibility for the continued deterioration in service delivery and resign,” he said.
“ZNOART further calls upon the Minister of Local Government and Public Works to appoint an inclusive commission to administer the affairs of Chitungwiza in the interest of residents and to restore effective governance, accountability and quality service delivery.
“ZNOART invites all residents whose homes are affected by persistent sewer bursts, raw sewage overflows or water supply challenges and residents with knowledge of major sewer hotspots in Chitungwiza to contact the organisation so that these locations can be included during the inspection tour.”
