ZOC celebrates Olympic Day

International Olympic Movement, used to be called the Olympic Day Run until 2009 when it became the Olympic Day.
It is celebrated every last weekend of June to commemorate the founding of the modern Olympics on  June 23, 1894: on all the five continents this event attracts men, women, children, athletes and spectators celebrating, in their own unique ways, the revival of the modern Games, an event which has been held over 64 times.
This year (2012) marks the 25th year of Olympic Day celebrations held by the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee.
Events are scheduled to be held over the next month in Harare, Kwekwe and Bulawayo.
The Harare event will be held at the Chitungwiza Town Centre today, starting at 7:30am.
Apart from the 10km and 5km road run, the event this year will include a wide spectrum of sporting and fun-filled activities, among them athletics, basketball, netball, fussball, tug of war volleyball and wrestling.
The Coca Cola Olympic Day will bring under one umbrella sport, cultural and educational activities that promote and celebrate the Olympic Movement and its values.
This year’s celebrations will follow the theme “Move, Learn and Discover!” seeking to encourage participants and athletes alike to experience physical movement and activity which hold a myriad of benefits.
The event will also serve as a focal point for the count down towards the Games of the XXX Olympiad to be held in London in 2012 from July 27 to August 12. 
Olympic days highlight the ever-growing focus on sport making a difference to society by addressing relevant and pertinent issues such as environmental conservation and sustainable development, drug abuse in sport and the decline in positive and acceptable values.
Sport seeks to engender a culture of respect, solidarity, friendship and fair play, and has growingly been utilised as a catalyst for peace building. Once again, ZOC is pleased by the commitment and selfless social responsibility by Zimbabwean corporates, with the major sponsor this year being Coca Cola. 
Anna Mguni the ZOC chief executive commended Coca Cola for coming on board to support the event.
