adminIncumbent ZOC president Masenda will be seeking re-election after he was ushered into the hot seat in July 2006 and he will be fighting to retain it against former top sprinter Gonye, who currently holds the post of treasurer in the same organisation.
This was revealed yesterday by the ZOC chief executive, Anna Mguni, who also said all the posts on their executive board will be contested for during Sunday’s indaba at Prince Edward School and will include the two posts of first and second vice-president which are currently being held by Brian Warren and Busi Chindove.
Warren is not seeking re-election for one of the posts of two vice-presidents but seasoned female sports administrator Chindove has once again thrown her hat into the ring and will face opposition from four other candidates — Gonye, Rick Fulton, Custom Kachambwa and Fredrick Ndlovu.
After being nominated to contest for both the president and one of the two vice-presidents posts, Gonye will not be seeking re-election as the ZOC treasurer and this has opened the way for George Nechamba, Mike Nicholson and Godfrey Sunguro to fight it out for this sole position on Sunday.
Twenty-six candidates have also put their names for the seven committee members berths and they include one of the country’s top female sportswriters Merrit Munzwembiri, National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe president Tendayi Tagara and Zifa chief executive Jonathan Mashingaidze.
Meanwhile, the ZOC general assembly is the highest authority on all matters to do with the Olympic Movement in Zimbabwe and holds its meetings annually.
According to Article 12 of the ZOC constitution, at least every four years and not more than eight months after the completion of the Olympic Games, the general assembly must meet to elect members of the executive board, or fill any vacancy on the executive board.
The 2013 general assembly will be elective and will act upon the items appearing on the agenda as follows:
1. Confirmation of delegates’ credentials and national associations’ standings.
2. Notice convening the general assembly.
3. Adoption of agenda.
4. Confirmation of minutes of the previous general assembly.
5. President’s message.
6. Report on activities of the executive board.
7. Audited accounts and financial report including ratification of annual budget and appointment of honorary auditors.
8. Motions from the executive board and national associations
9. Election of executive board (11 members)
10. General business.
With due notice having been served 42 days before the session, local national sports associations were invited to nominate and forward names of candidates 14 days before the assembly.
The nominations received were verified by the ZOC executive board at its special meeting on April 20, 2013 and the candidates will contest to fill the 11 vacancies, with the provision that at least three of the elected should be women (according to Article 15 of the ZOC constitution).
Sunday’s elections will be presided over by ZOC trustee Mike Ndubiwa and Sports Commission’s director general Charles Nhemachena.
